The San Jose International Airport is the main airport in Costa Rica. Located near the city of Alajuela, 18 km from the city of San Jose. The airport is named after Juan Santamaría, the national hero of Costa Rica

because of its participation in the National Campaign of 1856-1857.

The airport has won several awards as third best airport in its category and fourth best airport in America in general category. The organization Airports Council International (ACI), based in Switzerland, awarded to Juan Santamaria as the third best airport in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2010 and called it the one that had the most progress in the region.
